It's the most wonderful time of year again! Holidays songs are in the air, the tinsel is flying, and spirits are high. Or are they? Despite its reputation as a time of happiness, the holidays can be a hard time for many of us. Maybe you've had a difficult year. Perhaps you've lost someone that you love, or your career has been challenging. Whatever the reason, there is one holiday gift you can give yourself that might be able to help. The gift of gratitude.
Gratitude can be a difficult gift to give, especially if you’re already feeling over-stressed by the holidays. But being able to look at your life and find things to celebrate can genuinely help your outlook. When you feel down or depressed, it’s like you’re wearing blinders, only able to look straight ahead. When you begin to practice gratitude, it’s like the blinders come off and you’re able to see all around you at all the things you can celebrate.
Not only can expressing gratitude make you feel better, it can also be one of the most wonderful gifts you can give those you care about. In our world, we rarely express how we really feel to people. We think, “Oh, they know. I don’t have to SAY it.” But when you do say it, remarkable things can happen. Nothing can touch someone quite like an honest expression of how much they mean to you. If you aren't the type of person who feels comfortable expressing how you feel out loud, you could write them a note. Forget making their day, a true expression of gratitude can make someone’s year!
Expressing gratitude can allow you to release all of the things you were holding inside and didn't even realize. It can make you more optimistic about your life and the people in it. It truly is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and others.
So, this holiday season when you’re hoping for that perfect gift, remember that you already have so many invaluable gifts around you. Even at the worst times, there is so much to be thankful for.
Let me take this opportunity to say how much you all mean to me. Helping people find their source of inspired brilliance is what drives me every day of my life. Thank you to all of my readers, my clients, and to the people who I work with every day. I am grateful for all of you beyond my ability to say. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!
